The youth of Makhaza, a township in Khayelitsha, are confronted with overwhelming odds on a daily basis. Drugs and gang violence are endemic. Khayelitsha is a product of forced relocation during the apartheid era-with one million inhabitants it is the largest of the many townships that surround Cape Town. Twenty plus years into our democratic dispensation two thirds still live in shacks and informal settlements with few basic amenities. Unemployment for youths under twenty five is close to 70%.
